Go Green Turns 5!

By: Jill Buck

It was five years ago this month that I began writing the Go Green Initiative on my kitchen table. We launched the program in our first school in September 2002, but I can remember the exhilaration and all the hope I had as I researched and sought consultation over that summer. The program is now operating in 35 U.S. states, and in 12 provinces outside the U.S. We have schools in Europe, Mexico, and Africa, and new schools register every single day! We are present in over 300 cities worldwide now.

I'm so proud of the accomplishments of our Go Green family, and as we continue to grow exponentially, I look forward to the day when we won't need a program like the GGI...when environmentally responsible behavior will simply be our modus operandi.

One of the things that encourages me most about the GGI is that each school and city that has joined our network has done so voluntarily. There is no mandate driving our numbers of participants, no legislation and no tax increases. This program is fueled by communities who are ready to take matters in their own hands to protect our environment for generations to come. Our Go Green family is growing because people WANT to be a part of this movement, not because they HAVE to. I think the good news of the environmental protection movement is demonstrated through the efforts of over 1 million teachers and students who are enthusiastically bringing the GGI to their neighborhoods.

Well done, Go Green advocates! Well done.
