Parental Environmental Education...Simple, Yet Powerful

I'm always on the lookout for evidence that proves my theory that people are good and want to do the right thing. I'm especially happy when I find evidence to support that theory when I see parents interacting with their kids. Every parent knows that we get a certain number of "teaching moments" each day when we can influence our children's way of looking at the world around them...for the good or for the bad. I'm like every other parent - some days I feel pretty good about the messages I conveyed to my kids, and some days I'm not sure if I should save for their college fund or their therapy fund! (:
Yesterday, I saw a mom who did a small, but very powerful, thing to teach her child a great message about caring for the environment. I was in a public restroom after my son's hockey game, and a mother with a darling little toddler was helping her wash her hands. The little girl was fascinated with the automatic paper towel dispenser, and wanted to keep waving her hands to watch more and more paper towels come out. And really, who can blame her...it's cool, right? But the mom was precious, and said, "That's enough, honey, don't waste paper. Let's give this extra to this lady." Of course I beamed as I took the paper from the little girl, and gave her mom a big thumbs up for incorporating a little 'green learning' so effortlessly for her daughter.
It's moments like these that convince me that when parents and schools unite in a complimentary message to our kids that our natural resources are too precious to be wasted, we can teach them to be good stewards of the environment. If that little girl ends up in a school that has adopted the Go Green Initiative, she will hear the same message from her teachers that her mommy has been giving her all along!
